Walk a Mile in Their Shoes Presented by AVANA is Back!
The 2023 Walk a Mile in Their Shoes event is happening September 21,2023! This event is our organization’s keystone annual fundraising event that directly supports Isabel Johnson Shelter.
As you may know, Walk a Mile is a community-focused fundraiser where we ask our supporters to step up to raise awareness on gender-based violence by taking a walk around downtown Regina in red shoes – a symbolic show of awareness of intimate partner violence.
It is a light-hearted way for our walkers to challenge themselves to learn about the impact of intimate partner violence, and to show their support. Our goal is that walkers challenge themselves by having difficult conversations about the realities of violence in Saskatchewan, while stepping into their roles as leaders, allies and change-makers.
Saskatchewan continues to maintain the record for the highest rate of intimate partner violence of the provinces, a rate twice the national average. We see this impact daily – over 80% of women who come to our shelters do so because they are fleeing violence. Through this event, our goal is not only to raise vital funds for YWCA’s Isabel Johnson Shelter, but to raise awareness of the work our organization is doing in preventing and ending gender-based violence.
